Doctors Hospital is beginning a new program to help our patients and our community find better health through lifestyle change.

It is our hope that by attending this clinic you will have significant improvement in your health and medical conditions, decreasing your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other diseases, as well as decreasing your need of medication, thereby saving money at the same time!

It is an 18 week program, meeting on Wednesdays 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM, beginning in January. Each session will consist of group discussion, having your blood pressure, weight and pulse checked, watching an educational presentation, and participating in hands on healthy food demonstrations. You will have weekly assignments that will be practical, educational, and hopefully fun!

Who should attend?

1) Anyone who is suffering from one or more of the following chronic western diseases:

Cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease

Diabetes or borderline diabetes

Overweight

High blood pressure or borderline high blood pressure

Elevated cholesterol or triglyceride

2) Anyone who is ready to take charge of their own health and make lifestyle changes:

Be willing to stop smoking, if using tobacco

Be willing to participate in an exercise program

Be willing to decrease animal products (meat, chicken, fish, dairy, eggs) in your diet

Be willing to decrease salt and sugar in your diet

3) Willing and able to attend 18 educational sessions at DHN on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-3:00.

4) Willing to have an initial Live Healthy physician evaluation before beginning the program, midway through, and again at the end of the program.

5) Willing to have blood drawn before beginning the program, mid way through, and again at the end of the program.

6) Not currently using alcohol, if diagnosed as an alcoholic

7) Under the care of a primary health care provider (PCP), or be willing to be assigned to a PCP.

The group session will be provided free of charge as a community service program by DHN. However, when you see the doctor one on one, your insurance will be billed for services provided in the clinic, and for the diagnostic tests ordered. You will be responsible for personal out of pocket expenses as outlined by your insurance plan for these charges. If you are uninsured, and have financial need, DHN has financial assistance available.

If you are interested, please discuss this with your primary care provider, and set up an appointment for an evaluation and detailed explanation of the Live Healthy Clinic.

You can call Doctors Hospital Clinic at: 740-593-5101 for more information and to schedule a Live Healthy evaluation!

The top resolution is to spend more time with your family. Following behind that is the desire to exercise more and tame the bulge.

60% of gym memberships go unused, and gym attendance starts to break back down around mid-February.

52% of resolution-makers were confident that they’d achieve their goals, yet only 12% succeeded (Richard Wiseman)

Those who took meaningful steps to achieve their resolutions—setting step-by-step goals or telling their friends and family, for example—were far more likely to achieve their desires than those who made no specific commitments.

Women are more successful when they told their friends about their resolutions. Men are more successful when they set S.M.A.R.T goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time based).

Set your goals with sincerity, and set yourself up for success.

Steps to Success

1. Get Specific

A common mistake people make is setting big, nebulous goals like, “I’ll be healthier.” Instead, make your resolution specific, with a tangible, achievable outcome. Rather than saying, “I want to save money,” determine how much, exactly, you want to save. What are you saving it for, and what will you do once you hit your goal?

2. Write it Down

Write down your goals and outline the small, manageable steps you’ll need to take in order to achieve them. If you set a big goal—say, learning a language—without a step-by-step plan, it can be overwhelming and trigger frustration or negative thoughts that get in the way of your success. But by planning and accomplishing one small thing at a time, you’ll stay on track, focused, and positive.

3. Make Time

Be sure to set aside ample time for yourself to achieve your goals. If you really want to write that book chapter, you might set aside three regular four-hour blocks during the week, and plan one day every month to track your progress. If you want to exercise more, plot out time in your weekly schedule for runs and time at the gym.

4. Move Past Doubt

Keep tabs on how often you “unset” your goals with your thoughts. Pay attention to self-sabotaging mind chatter, like: “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t do it.” Every thought you have is an intention. It’s normal to feel fear, doubt, or worry—but to make progress, it’s important to move past those negative feelings.

If you find negative thoughts surfacing, don’t criticize yourself, but stay in control. If your thoughts don’t support you or your goals, let them go—they’re not doing you any good. Replace them with your positive mantra, instead.

5. Get a Partner

Having a group, partner, friend, or professional to encourage you can be a great way to keep you going. Try finding a friend who has a similar resolution, and check in with each other every week to talk about your progress and challenges. Or, ask a family member or significant other to keep you accountable—just make sure they’re supportive and positive.

You can also seek professional help, whether that’s a personal trainer to help you meet your fitness goals or a counselor who can help you tackle larger, looming issues such as low self-confidence or a lack of direction. If you are dealing with issues of self-doubt, these can seriously get in the way of you meeting your other goals—so do yourself a favor, and address such issues head on.

6. Be Still

You’re more likely to slip on your goals when you’re stressed or overwhelmed, so spend time every day to getting out of your thoughts and reconnecting with yourself. Try a breathing exercise, meditation, yoga, or just going for a walk. The more practice you have being still and calm, the more present you’ll be for each step of achieving your goals.

A Live Healthy Appalachia Fundraiser!

Live Healthy Appalachia’s first ever 5k/Bike ride fundraiser held November 17th in Athens was a HUGE success. A total of 90 attendees ran, walked or biked while supporting the programs and work of LHA. Many of these attendees were local, but some participants from came from as far as Columbus to participate. There was an overwhelmingly positive response from the participants. Some said it was their first 5k, one participant even said that she is going to register for a 5k during the holidays. And of course the major reason why everyone came out…the PIE! We followed a delicious a plant strong pumpkin pie recipe that was a dead-ringer for the traditional holiday favorite. One participant said she was going to make it at home because her husband had no idea it was healthy. Live Healthy Appalachia: 1; Sugar & Fat: 0.

We ended up raising over $2,000, which will help us combat unhealthy behaviors throughout Appalachia. We had a great event and would like to thank our valued sponsors WellWorks, Reed & Baur, Intelliwave, and Herbal Sage, Jim Schulz for organizing the “Gear Up for Winter” expo, Jen Cochran for demonstrating her amazing chair massage, John Kotowski for timing the race, Mother Nature for supplying us with a beautiful day, our team of pie-bakers who donated a total of 13 pies, and participants, volunteers and planners because we couldn’t have done it without you.
