Farm to Table
The Athens County Food Pantry Project is a collaborative effort to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals served by Athens County Food Pantries. To work toward this goal, the collaboration has offered a training in March 2012 to Food Pantry Coordinators in Southeast Ohio on how to integrate healthy and local food into food pantries to help reduce food insecurity and poor health that often goes with not having enough nutrient rich foods.
The program aims to create a sustainable system that promotes health by connecting Food Pantries to resources for healthy foods, helping Food Pantries build systems for distributing healthy and fresh foods, and building demand for healthy foods by educating Food Pantry Patrons.
In Spring and Summer of 2012, the collaborative will work with 2 food pantries in Athens County to provide a hand-on healthy cooking and nutrition workshop to food pantry patrons.
