Free Community Meals
The Healthy Shopping and Cooking Committee has helped at a number of free community meals. If you work with an organization that provides free meals and would like to work with the committee, please Contact Us.
Past Projects:
In spring of 2011, the Healthy Shopping and Cooking committee organized local events to educate community members through local grocery store tours led by student volunteers from Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions and cooking demonstrations with local chefs. At the Athens Kroger, “tourists” at each of the three events learned about label reading and the importance of fruits and vegetables in a heart healthy diet.
The cooking demos, led by celebrated local chefs Jonathan Leal, owner of Vino Di Milo, and Libby Markham, owner of the Busy Day Market, demonstrated health cooking techniques and recipes. These free programs reached over 50 community members, with a high demand for similar program in the future.
